“Productivity, first of all, the way we define it, is not just getting things done, it’s doing things that add value to our lives.”
Shruti Rustagi offers a practical framework for productivity without burnout, grounded in personal definitions of success, focused priorities, emotional intelligence, and intentional family relationships. Her approach helps professionals and entrepreneurs direct their energy toward meaningful work while making room for the people and commitments that give life its purpose.
Productivity without burnout becomes a real challenge when career ambitions, business responsibilities, and family life all demand attention at the same time. A full calendar can look productive while leaving little room for the people who matter or the work that creates lasting value.
Shruti Rustagi knows this tension firsthand. A corporate leader with two decades of international experience, a leadership development partner, an entrepreneur, an author, and a mother, she has had to make deliberate choices about where her time and attention belong. Her book, Fearless Productivity: Mindset Pivots to Maximize Life, grew from a personal moment in Dubai when she recognized that the way she was operating was affecting the kind of mother and person she wanted to be.
What does success look like when life has several priorities?
Shruti defines success personally. For her, being a good mother can mean being fully present with her children, without turning every family responsibility into another performance standard. At work, success means delivering value against organizational priorities. This clarity has shaped her career decisions, including moving from people management into an individual contributor role to make room for writing her book and growing her business.
She views careers as a lattice, with different paths to developing skills, meeting aspirations, honoring values, and fitting the realities of a particular season of life. The next step does not have to follow a predetermined ladder.
How do you decide what deserves your attention?
Shruti uses the 80/20 principle to identify the small set of priorities that create the greatest value. Her framework offers three questions for evaluating incoming work: Why me? Why now? Why this?
The questions help determine whether you are the right person to handle something, whether it needs attention immediately, and whether it represents the best use of your time. Tasks can be delegated, delayed, or removed when they do not warrant your direct involvement. The same discipline applies at home and at work, where choosing your priorities also means choosing which battles you are willing to fight.
What role does emotional intelligence play in productivity?
Worry, frustration, and guilt can shape decisions before we have time to think clearly. Shruti recommends noticing the emotion, creating a pause, and then choosing the next useful response. One simple practice involves rubbing the thumb and index finger together while paying attention to the sensation. Repeated during ordinary moments, the exercise can help build the habit of pausing during stressful situations.
The objective is practical: recognize what is happening internally, regain enough space to think, and focus on what is within your control.
How can you organize work without overwhelming yourself?
Shruti treats a to do list as a place to clear the mind, not a promise to complete every item that day. Each morning, she identifies one most important task and considers the rest additional progress. Weekly planning provides a broader view of deadlines, meetings, family commitments, and upcoming responsibilities, making it easier to recognize capacity before agreeing to more work.
She also recommends combining work and family calendars so decisions reflect the whole week. When overwhelm builds, a short break outdoors can provide space to reset. During a particularly difficult period in Seattle, Shruti visited an arboretum, sat in a tree, and allowed herself to cry. The experience became a reminder that recovery sometimes begins by stepping away from the demand to keep going.
How can ambition coexist with family relationships?
Entrepreneurial pressure reaches beyond the person running the business. Shruti speaks from experience as both an entrepreneur and the partner of an entrepreneur, recognizing that family members may be carrying their own worries while supporting someone else’s challenges.
Her recommendation is to design an alliance with the people closest to you. Talk openly about where support is needed, agree on responsibilities, and make space to ask how everyone else is doing. Being present for five minutes and genuinely listening can strengthen a relationship that might otherwise be crowded out by business demands.
Productivity without burnout starts with a more deliberate definition of value. The goal is to give meaningful work your best attention while protecting the relationships, personal values, and moments that make the effort worthwhile.
